FAQ

  • What exactly do I do for students?

I teach and coach accounting students to help them build the professional skills that they are increasingly required to display in their assessments, especially at higher levels. Part of that process is helping them develop growth mindsets, as this is essential for them to adopt, adapt and build completely new skills. I provide students with the awareness of the need for their professional skill and practical tools to help them shift their habits and approaches and mindset. I've worked on this with students for 10 years and this course is intended to share the lessons I've learnt, the tools and advice I provide students with, the challenges I've found, the coaching iterations that work (and don't!) and the research I've come across that impacts our students.

  • Is this based on academic research?

Yes and no (Very academic response there!). Mindset in accounting education is currently limited. While professional skill requirements are shifting within accounting curricula, but we're still figuring out what that looks like. We'll look at research relating to these discussions. As yet, the concepts I raise have not been directly researched (...but watch this space!)

  • What students do I work with?

I'm not affiliated to any education institutions, so students who are struggling with their studies find me. I work mostly with students who have either failed, or are failing, and are looking for advice, support and assistance in changing their approaches and developing skills they're clearly missing. As a South African Chartered Accountant myself, most of my students are working towards their SAICA and other African qualifications. I work with ACCA students in the UK, and I run mindset sessions for a research community of students working towards their PhD's in various domains.
